Coal Country Beeworks

While I was at the Incredible Food Show I discovered many interesting Kentucky food businesses and I will write about many of them. One of the more intriquing ones was Coal Country Beeworks. whose goals include the following :

- Collaboration with coal companies to plant pollinator friendly trees and flowers on reclaimed mine sites .

- Restore the tradition of beekeeping in the region through outreach and developement of a commercial honey in Appalacia .

- Contribute to the body of knowledge about the nation-wide honeybee population by developing "genetic islands" that are isolated from Midwest and California flyways where colony collapse disorder has decimated approximately 30% of migratory operations .

This project is being spearheaded by Dr. Tammy Horn at Eastern Kentucky University .

Orchid Flower Sushi Bar & Satay House

Last week I spent some time with Wiwi Harrison who is the owner of Orchid Flower Sushi Bar and Satay House at 3090 Old Todds Road # 160 in Lexington , KY . This restaurant is the only restaurant in the state of Kentucky that is based on Indonesian cuisine . The next issue of Business Lexington will have an article I wrote about the restaurant but I urge people to give it a try . Here is a link to the restaurant website.
